Bender Hamlet

At this site in 1903, the first jewish farm colony in M<anitoba was founded. It was named after Jacob Bender, the founder, who migrated who immigrated from Nikolaiev, ukraine. 19 families built their homes, a synagogue, and a school to carry on their cultural and religous beliefs. However, due to social isolation and farming limitations the community declined. Graually families left and by 1927 the colony was abandoned. Remaining is a cemetery, lot separations, and building foundations. A monmument made from stones was places in October 1986 and dedicated in June 1987, which lists pionee families who lived at Bender Hamlet.
